Fall Interior Design Trends

 Via

Last week I gave a presentation on design trends and wanted to pass along the information I shared with my readers as well.

Neutrals:  One trend that we have seen since the beginning of the recession is a move toward neutrals and nature inspired colors.  In regards to paint colors this is translated with less bold colors and a trend toward cooler rather than the warmer "yellow" toned colors we have seen in past years.

Grey:  There is a new trend for using grey as a neutral.  Because grey has such a broad range, it can be used as a wall color for almost any room.  It can include more beige or lean toward blue or green.  We can also see a trend toward more grey furniture which can provide interest in a room much the way that a bit of white or black can.

When creating a neutral interior, we as designers use other elements to make sure the room still has visual interest.  Some ways to do this are by using interesting materials, texture and pattern.

Texture:  Natural elements are one way to bring texture into a room.  This may be a woven basket or tray, or even a sisal rug.

Metallic:  Adding a bit of shine is another way to add visual interest.  A variety of metals are being used together and yes it is true....gold is back!  Gold can be seen everywhere from fashion to interiors and is a good compliment to black or chocolate brown.

Bold Patterns:  Pattern is another big trend.  We are seeing bold patterns in pillows, rugs, drapery and bedding.  When mixing patterns make sure that one is larger in scale than the other.

Mix of Styles:  Another way to make a room more interesting is to have furniture that has a mix of styles.  This can be tricky to achieve.  For example, you wouldn't want to have a mid-century chair along side a mission table.  However a glass coffee table is a good compliment to a round dark wood side table.

Modern Art:  This is one trick I have been using in many of my interiors as a way to bring some freshness to a space that can be primarily traditional.  The result is a little more youthful and less serious.
